About this module

This module illustrates how reflective practice can be used to enhance the quality of teacher and learner performance in a numeracy session. It develops appropriate reflective practice techniques and suggests links to relevant methods and theories for subject teaching.

The module covers a series of critical incidents from a session for numeracy learners at L1 (with one E3 learner). It shows how such incidents can be used as opportunities to improve performance through different method(s) of reflection.

Schon's theory of reflection
One of the principal contributions Donald Schon made to teaching and personal development practice was to introduce the concept of reflection as a tool of personal development. It involves looking to our experiences, exploring our own values and beliefs, connecting with our feelings, and attending to our theories in use. It entails building new understandings to inform our actions in the situation that is unfolding.
