When to reflect
What type of reflective activity would have helped Abid?
Click on the method(s) of reflection, based on the principles outlined by Schon, that you think would be most useful to develop Abid's practice.
Then select the other answers to understand why they are not appropriate in this case.
Reflection before action
Yes, the main difficulty encountered here is caused by Abid's exasperation with prior mobile use. This has clearly been an issue in previous sessions and it would have been sensible to decide on a class rule. He hasn't worked out a strategy for ensuring this is discussed openly. So reflection before action would have been sensible.
Reflection in action
Abid could have decided on a course of action in the session when both Amy and Shameem had answered their calls. He could have used this as a spur to decide on a class policy. This would engage all the learners in democratic process and may help them feel more part of the group.
Reflection on action
Reflection on action takes place after the event. Whilst this could be useful, any reflection here will be mixed in with other critical incidents that might occur across the narrative of the session. However, the advice to reflect before action, during preparation, will have to be delivered through the vehicle of reflection on action.
