Tyler’s (1950) definition of evaluation states:

‘The process of evaluation is essentially the process of determining to what extent the educational objectives are actually being realised...’ p69

Goldstein (1993) defines evaluation as:

‘The systematic collection of descriptive and judgemental information necessary to make effective decisions related to the selection, adoption, value and modification of various instructional activities.’ p147

You should build evaluation into your mentoring programme from the very beginning. If one objective is to improve the performance of the mentee, then you need to identify their performance level before mentoring in order to recognise any progress made.
