Positive, critical, honest and timely feedback
Feedback should be:
Positive – to praise and encourage the mentee. Build on success, no matter how small.
Critical – the mentee needs to become self-critical of their work.
Honest - always be honest and address issues clearly. The mentee needs to be able to trust and value your comments. Don't beat about the bush or make ambivalent statements.
Timely – feedback should be as soon after the observed session as possible. If this is not possible immediately after the session, then a date should be set for a feedback meeting and an indication of how the session went should be given in a positive manner. The mentee should see feedback as a positive and even enjoyable dialogue.
