What is mentoring? - Introduction: page 1 of 2

Introduction

Mentoring is used by organisations to develop individuals and help them reach their full potential. It is normally part of a formal programme, but for many, the process is informal and defined by the mentor. The mentor helps the mentee to discover something new about themselves and their capabilities.

Many definitions of 'mentoring' exist, as mentors have been used in different establishments for different purposes. Also, mentoring programmes vary in style and approach.

This means that it can be difficult to transfer formal training skills into classroom practice without using mentors (critical friends).
